Photo-Hunt in the Wild

“Photo-Hunt in the Wild” is a chance for families to discover new links with Cockermouth and the Northern Lakes wilderness. This activity, designed for children aged 10-18, will enable them to learn Bushcrafts skills like stalking and making hides with trainer Peter Skillen and then capture the wildlife with their digital camera with young photographer Christopher Bell (have a look at his stunning shots of the Lakes http://www.cbellphotography.co.uk/ ). The photos will be later displayed in an exhibition later this autumn and the participants will also be encouraged to submit their work to national competitions like the ones run by CountryFile and the RSPCA.

Where: The expeditions leave the Cockermouth Memorial Gardens Car Park
When: July 18th, August 2nd, 15th and 29th at 13:00
Fee: £3 per child (under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult) and £7 per family.

Screening of The Age of Stupid by Riversmeet

“You won’t see a more important film this year.” News of the World
“I defy anyone to come out and not feel like they’ve got to make a difference.” Caroline Lucas, Leader of the Green Party

This independent film, starring Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off) shakes our collective conscience by integrating a poignant drama and the reality of Climate Change. The film tells the story of a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at “archive” footage from 2007 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?
The film will be followed by a discussion on the issues raised and how they affect us locally. The bar will also be open.

Where: The Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth
When: August 10th, doors open 19:30 for 20:00

The event is free, but booking is required, reserved your ticket early since the places are limited.

For more information or to book a ticket contact enquiries@thekirkgate.com box office: 01900 826448

Upcycled:
Invitation to Creative Practitioners: crafts, design, visual artists, makers of all kinds

Why do people spend their hard earned cash on new products, when for a fraction of the cost they can get what they need at a local auction? Our Upcycling project aims to help make second hand goods desirable by using creative people to explore their potential; make the connection with people who have the skills to remodel objects; and provide training for people who want to do it themselves. Riversmeet are working with Mitchells auction house to develop this project.

If you think you have the skills to offer or ideas to make secondhand goods into new products then we would like to meet you to discuss ways we can work together.

Where: Neo’s café, Marketplace, Cockermouth
When: August 6th at 19:30

Cockermouth Homeworkers Network

The Cockermouth Homeworkers Network is an expanding group of local professionals who have chosen to live and work in the community, providing skills and services in the fields of Art, Design, Information Technology, Human Relations, Media and Communications. We meet once a month at Neo's Cafe in Market Place as an informal social network. At present we are exploring how we might collaborate to encourage further development of locally provided services, to minimise our communities carbon footprint from road travel. We believe that Home working is the future and want to hear from people across all vocations who are interested in networking and collaborating for mutual and community benefit. Please come along to one of our social gatherings.

Spadework Community Food Growing Association

Spadework has been established through our partnership with the Allotment Association. This new local organisation is raising awareness of the value and pleasures of growing your own produce and setting up networks for skills exchange and training of new growers. We have a complete cross- section of age groups getting involved, including parents with children, wanting to give their youngsters an early taste of the fun of growing and eating their own produce, as well people looking for new directions in retirement. We have now identified a site for our first community food growing project, but will continue to seek new land for community orchards, bee-keeping as well as fruit and vegetable production. If you would like to help others with developing their skills, or need help and advice yourself please come along to our next meeting. All are welcome!
