or...Plastic carrier bag free town
It's said that the plastic carrier bag should be our national flag as it flutters from trees, hedges and swirls around our town centres.
Plastic bags are a convenience but have become the symbol of our throw away society. 80% of carriers go to landfill after a single use and take up to 400 yrs to break down. All of the bags manufactured since 1950 are still in our environment. They polute and damage wildlife on land and sea, are oil based and litter our countryside.
This has driven Riversmeet to initiate a project for Cockermouth to become a plastic carrier bag free town. We intend to achieve this with the support of the town traders and townsfolk.
The project is in its early stages but we have a strategy(see attached) and we are using the experience of other towns who have already achieved this as out model i.e Modbury in Devon.www.plasticbagfree.com

Here's a quick question...
As a single house owner I don't have anywhere near as much black bin rubbish as other households. I can quite easily go for 4 weeks without filling a bin bag... most things go in the recycling bins.
I often just use a plastic carrier bag instead of a bin bag... are bin bags just as bad to the environment as plastic carrier bags?
