or...Looking for a site to put my Bee Hives. Does anyone have anywhere suitable?
Submitted by Martin Ingram on 12th August 2009
I am looking for suitable site to put 2 or 3 beehives. Preferably it would be a field near Cockermouth or surrounding villages. I would be happy to pay rent in honey (if they produce some!!!!).
Originally I wanted to place them on my allotment but the head of the Cockermouth Beekeepers association has suggested that this might not be a good idea.
If you have a suitable plot I would be very grateful. You can contact me via email at martin.ingram3@btinternet.com
Thanks
Martin

Bee Hives
Hi Martin,
There are a number of possible leads that I can think of.
The Community Food Growing Association is setting up a Community Garden in the walled garden beyond Wyndham Lodge and there is another Bee Keeper wanting to set up a Community Apiary there to share learning and encourage more people to keep bees.
Cockermouth School is also developing a small beekeeping project.
I am also talking to Landowners in Lorton about Horticultural Projects that could include Bees
Also there is Michelle and her husband at Stanger who are developing a Veg and Fruit Farm.
What are your criteria for a site?
Rick
Criteria for Site
Basically somewhere reasonably quiet where the bees are not going to be a nuisance to others! I am aware that there are at least 2 beekeepers in Lorton at present and their hives are not doing to well. Although pretty I do not think it has a wide enough variety of pollen producing plants!
The Stanger Fruit & Veg farm sounds just about perferct though. Are they organic? Would need a site somewhere away from where spraying occurs. It could be a good symbiotic relationship though.
I am not too sure about the Cockermouth School option. I think the key here is insurance. I think the CBKA would be very nervous about such a project. The hives would have to be placed a considerable distance away from the school.
The Walled garden may be a possibility although it needs to be carefully sited to avoid other users being stung.
Thanks for you help and assistance.
Martin
Ideas for finding a site for my bees?
Does anyone have any ideas about where I could get in contact with landowners regarding a small plot of land to put some beehives on???
