or...derwent forest opportunity
I see in the Times & Star the proposal for Derwent Forest/Broughton Moor site is a Luxury leisure spa hotel & golf course. Would Riversmeet like to make a proposal to Allerdale of something that reflects the environmental and social challenges facing us? Something innovative that will put West Cumbria in the lead of the revolution?
I was thinking of aiming high learning and expanding on Eden and the Centre for Alternative Technology www.cat.org.uk * more - could be the alternative end of the Energy Coast too.
The project could include
- zero carbon village
- environmental incubator for new environmental industries (small units with infrastructure support)
- environmental education - institute?
- environmental hotel/lodges and appropriate activities
- wildlife projects
- demonstration of environmental projects and training for builders/plumbers etc. for environmental products.
These would come in phases in-line with a vision. Probably in partnership with a University and others.
post your ideas and lets see if we can propose something

Derwent forest links
Has anyone thought to get in touch with parish councils around the site? I'm sure people like Cath Ferguson would have useful insights and valid opinions - at least we should try and find out. Is there any progress by riversmeet on this issue? I'm writing on behalf of FoE to David Martin this evening.

I know that both West Cumbria Friends of the Earth and the local green Party would be interested in joining in this discussion. Maybe we could have a brainstorming session one evening? It always comes up in the AOB section of FoE meetings but we wereinvolved way back in trying to push out the most damaging proposals (opencast etc) and get in some better ones. I'm going to email round some friends and other contacts and suggest they look on riversmeet website
Community Stakeholding in Forest
I agree with your views on this.
I have always maintained that this is a great opportunity for a flagship sustainable development project. It would be important to clearly establish the principles from the outset and limit development to activities that met strict sustainability criteria.
I believe that we need someone to represent community stakeholders in Derwent Forest.
There is potential for community owned wood and wind energy systems on this site as well as food growing capacity. Perhaps Riversmeet could take a lead here?
What about fixing a meeting with David Martin?
Derwent Forest
I was hoping to get a discussion going on ideas here which we could collate into giving the position of Riversmeet as a Stakeholder.
Yes I would endorse that;
Yes I would endorse that; the challenge however will be to raise awareness of the real opportunities for the community, before key decisions are made.
How might we widen this awareness?
