Age of Stupid
Submitted by Brianwaite on 11th August 2009
Thank you to whomever organised the showing of "The Age of Stupid" - Scary, however the peddler of wind turbines would have gained more credibility if he hadn't been driving a top of the range BMW. Brian Balfern Waite

Re: the car
Actually I seem to remember the car was introduced as running on used chip fat oil - but even so a smaller one would have gone further on the same amount of oil

age of stupid.
What an interesting detail, I didn't notice it myself. But I thought that it is quite interesting to have a film which focus on windturbines, since it is quite a tense subject in the area... But the film didn't give much detail about where they were built. I must admit with these structures, it is really a matter of location, for example I think that the windturbine are a great idea in Workington, in the industrial area... I'm not so sure about them at the entrance of the Lake District, beside the moota, where the nature seekers have that in the background...
Besides, I thought the film was really well constructed, really good graphics... But it suffered from bias, for example the Indian businessman was presented as a brute, but they don't acknowledge that it is perhaps part of the Indian culture the shouting (especially out of context). I don't know if I'm right or wrong mind. I just think documentaries need to be careful about ethnography and don't always be only selected scene from a occidental point of view.
The age of stupid
Your right about the blatant bias in the film but it the same, to a greater or lesser degree, with everything. If one wants to take notice of anything first find out who paid for the research, report, article etc. Not too many people unashamedly lie – they are just selective with their information. (The Labour government has raised this to an art form).
For instance, when I built electric cars back in 1971-73 the journalists’ predictable question would be “its pollution free…isn’t it?” to which my reply had to be “Yes - at the point of delivery! Because, at that time, the conversion from coal fired power stations to driving the wheels of the car was about 8-10% efficient – so far more polluting than petrol straight into the tank. One only has to look at the cooling towers, the cooling fins on the transformers in the sub stations etc. etc. to see the truth of that.
Global warming and cooling is an unstoppable natural occurrence which has been operating since the earth was formed and there is no way we can stop it however we have obviously aggravated and accelerated the process and there is absolutely no excuse for the excessive waste and pollution we have embarked upon in the last few generations. If we use up all the oil on the narrow minded assumption that we will find a replacement energy source, what if a future generation finds, let’s say, a cancer cure from oil but not enough of it is left?? What will they think of us?
